Welcome

Welcome to the first issue of micro e-News, an electronic newsletter designed to keep you up to date with the latest developments in microscopy. With short, sharp, technically oriented pieces to help you get the most out of your microscopy, we intend to produce and distribute micro e-News 2 or 3 times per year.

This first issue assembles three Zeiss breakthroughs in live cell imaging technology and three members of the new FluoresScience microscope family. Faster, brighter, more evenly illuminated and with better contrast than any previous range of microscopes, you can read more about:
  • LSM 5 LIVE - multiple award-winner and the world's fastest confocal microscope
  • Axio Imager - innovative, flexible and versatile system with a singularly uncompromising focus on digital fluorescence microscopy
  • SteREO Lumar.V12 - 20% more image information with extremely bright fluorescence and high-contrast means images previously only possible with traditional light microscopes
Acclaimed already as "The Oscar of Invention" by R&D Magazine and awarded the "Photonics Circle of Excellence" by Photonics Magazine, our ApoTome article will help to explain why blurred, indistinct images of thick specimens should be consigned to history.

Total internal reflection microscopy has played a significant role in understanding the key events occurring at the cell surface, even examining single molecule reactions. In "SIRF the Evanescent Waves" we look at a new imaging device that does away with the complications of laser power, offering individual scientists a system based on standard HBO/XBO light sources.

Finally, a brand new technology designed to allow the use of plastic culture vessels in microscopic examinations is introduced. Together with the brilliant images offered by our new routine microscope, the Axiovert 40, PlasDIC is an example of perfect partnership and harmony.

I hope you find these articles informative and stimulating - if you think a colleague would enjoy reading micro e-News you can send them their own copy with our "Send to a Friend" link on the menu. Feedback is always welcome – just click on the special link in the menu bar on the left to send an email or phone on 08-459 25 00. Or, if you have an interesting application that you'd like to share, send it to us for possible inclusion in our next issue.
